Reading is hardly known for its rich collection of historic buildings. So i’m both sad and angry to hear that the old station booking office is to get knocked down as part of the station rebuilding.
It is grade 2 listed but it seems thats not enough. The concrete mess that is listed not far from the station can’t be knocked down so why is the older station building not safe? Since 1880 this building built with bath stone-which has kept its clean and crisp lines to this day and is topped with its white clock tower has been part of the Reading landscape.
Just across the road the Great western hotel has been refurbished to be, once again, a hotel and indeed was the first ever hotel in the UK, before there was only coaching inns. Would be a shame if its yonger sister was to be lost.
